A Family-Centered Program
December 9, 2009 by Teri Jackson · Leave a Comment
Studies have shown that strong partnerships with families is a critical component of a quality early childhood education program. Programs that are truly family-centered serve as a catalyst for children’s healthy development, provide opportunities for parent growth and serve as a hub for an array of family programs. At Metropolitan Montessori Schools, we believe parents are a child’s first teacher and that the family’s system of care is of utmost importance. In order to serve children well, we must work with their families. Metropolitan Montessori Schools is committed to a successful parent-provider partnership through cooperation, respect and the mutual goal of doing what is best for children in care. In aligning ourselves with a family-centered philosophy, MMS believes:
•The family is the constant in the child’s life
•The family is the center of a child’s life
•Families are the primary influence in the lives of their children
•Families are dynamic and engaged in a process of development
•Families cannot be generalized and must be viewed individually
•The culture of families and communities must be respected and valued
•Families have a great deal to offer child care providers – they provide information about the individual child, across time and in a variety of settings
•Families experience multiple demands
•Strong families make strong communities
•Investment in all children is important
•Children deserve a safe environment that enhances social, emotional and cognitive development

Cathedral House – A Brazelton Touchpoints Recognized Center
December 7, 2009 by Teri Jackson · Leave a Comment
Metropolitan Montessori Schools’ commitment to parental involvement and support for families has been a trademark of the early education provider for more than 21-years. That commitment has now earned national recognition as they have become a Brazelton Touchpoints Recognized Provider for the second consecutive year.
The Brazelton Touchpoints Recognition Program is a program of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, which was founded by renowned child development expert, T. Berry Brazelton, MD. The Program recognizes and distinguishes early education facilities that have demonstrated commitment to learning and integrating the Touchpoints Approach into their work. This approach requires on-going learning, reflective practice and professional development in order to use and build upon Dr. T. Berry Brazelton’s life-long work in making professionals, organizations and entire communities more family focused.
“We have always believed that communication and partnership with families is critical to a child’s success
and to now be able to showcase that belief through this recognition program is an incredible opportunity. Dr.
Brazelton’s work in making families stronger and more active participants in their children’s health care and
education is groundbreaking and inspirational, so it is a tremendous honor to be a part of this new
recognition program,” said Aaron Carrara, MMS’ Business Development Manager.
The Touchpoints Approach consists of positive tools for recognizing and embracing the strongest and best
elements of families so that positive, trusting relationships can be formed around the child. These tools also
allow service providers to share a common communications framework based on child development
milestones and behaviors that are easily understood by all families.
ABOUT Metropolitan Montessori Schools – MMS offers quality early education in the Houston area based
on the teachings of Maria Montessori. Ms. Montessori’s work focused on children’s natural need to learn and
explore. Through the use of creative environments, MMS works to help children on their natural journey to
self confidence, independence and competence. Along with strong curriculums for the children, MMS builds
partnerships with the families because of the importance of families in a child’s education. MMS believes
parents are a child’s first teacher and that the family’s system of care is of utmost importance.
MMS operates two programs in the Houston area, Cathedral House Episcopal School and the Rice Children’s
Campus through its non-profit counterpart, The Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE). Cathedral
House has been in operation for over 21-years, while the Rice Children’s Campus is a brand new facility that
opened this fall.
